The University of Chicago’s Center for Spatial Data Science has been pioneering innovative ways to teach students spatial methods through coding in R, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Python, and other technical languages. These training opportunities help diverse groups of women and underrepresented groups discover their capacity for coding and spatial analytics and keep students engaged through pathways for continued learning.

University of Chicago College or graduate students from underrepresented groups are invited to submit an application for a mini grant (up to $600) to advance their own work in spatial data science. Funds could be used to attend a conference, visit graduate schools, work on your own project as a paid research assistant or anything else you want to pitch related to spatial data science.

Submit your resume and 1-page proposal as a PDF file to Julia Koschinsky ( by May 1, 2021. Your proposal should describe what you would do with the mini grant that is significant to you and why.

This grant is made possible by ten donors who contributed to a fund to increase access to spatial data science for women and diverse groups through the University of Chicago Giving Tuesday campaign. The successful proposal will be shared with the donors to demonstrate the impact of their contribution.
